2000s Was Indeed a Decade from Hell! (Dec. 2009)

Time.Dec.09.Cover TIME magazine recently declared “00’s: Decade from Hell”. For those of us who have been focusing on catastrophe-related topics, the years 2000-2009 have certainly been extraordinary. While many countries, citizens and corporations shared the burden of the decade’s extreme events, America has been hit on almost every front in the past 10 years: Bookended by the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the anthrax crisis, the Enron crisis at the start and a series of major natural disasters and financial wipeout at the end, the first years of this century will very likely be seen as “the most daunting decade Americans have lived through in the post-World War II era”. I agree.

TIME cover’s subtitle is “And why the next one will be better.” Unfortunately, I would have to disagree with my friends at TIME. Unless we radically change the way we look at the world, today and for tomorrow, I’m afraid 2010-2020 will bring us a lot of even more significant catastrophes. We have entered a new era of catastrophes, which unfortunately will not stop with the end of the first decade of the 21st century, but rather intensify …

The question is: what are you willing to lose when the next crisis strikes? Are you prepared?
